Grammy-winning composer, arranger, pianist and saxophonist Gordon Goodwin and his l8-piece big band take the stage in a return visit to Music by the Lake on opening night. L.A.’s Big Phat Band, one of the most exciting large jazz ensembles on the planet, will team up for an exhilarating evening of crisp, classic arrangements and fiery soloing in Goodwin’s witty, highly original compositions. His ability to combine jazz excellence with any musical style makes him a favorite with fans—from beboppers to head bangers. Chicago native and Music by the Lake favorite Ann Hampton Callaway will join the band in a special set of smooth big band classics sure to delight every member of the audience. Hampton’s warmth, spontaneous wit and passionate delivery of the great standards puts her in a league all her own. This is a “match made in heaven”—the perfect way to open the 2013 season!
